Save the Historic Mt. Ogden Trail — Stop the City from Blocking Public Access!
The Issue
This trail has been part of our community for decades. It’s more than just a path — it’s where neighbors walk their dogs, kids ride their bikes, and families connect with the outdoors. We’ve used it openly and consistently for over 20 years, without signs, gates, or warning. Generations have relied on it. It’s part of the rhythm of life here, and it’s something many of us grew up with.
What is at stake?
Now the city wants to gate it off and ticket people for “trespassing” — even though the public has a clear and legal right to use this land. Under Utah law, when land is used by the public openly and continuously for so many years, it qualifies for what’s called a prescriptive easement. In other words, we’ve earned this right. Closing the trail would not only take away access we’ve had for decades — it would ignore the legal standing that protects our use. It would also set a dangerous precedent for other public spaces in Ogden.
Why is now the time to act?
The city has already said they’re planning to install gates — we’re out of time. If we don’t raise our voices now, we lose this trail forever. We need to show them that this community values what’s right, what’s fair, and what belongs to the people. We’re prepared to fight this — publicly, legally, and loudly. Let’s come together and make sure our city knows: we’re not letting this go without a fight.
