Save the Halifax Brand – Don’t Let 173 Years of British Banking History Disappear

For more than 173 years, Halifax has been one of Britain’s most recognised and trusted financial institutions.

Founded in 1853 as the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building Society, it helped generations of ordinary people save for the future and achieve the dream of home ownership. It grew to become the UK’s largest building society, pioneering products and making mortgages and savings more accessible to millions of families across the country.

Today, that remarkable heritage is under threat.

Lloyds Banking Group has announced its intention to retire the Halifax brand and migrate customers to Lloyds Bank. While customers have been assured that their accounts and services will continue, this decision represents the loss of one of Britain’s most iconic banking brands.

This is about far more than changing a logo.

Halifax has built its own identity over generations. It has always represented something different within the banking sector; approachable, community-focused and distinct from Lloyds Bank.

Many customers deliberately chose Halifax because it wasn’t Lloyds, even if they also hold Lloyds accounts. The two brands serve different audiences, have different personalities and evoke different levels of trust and loyalty.

Brand choice matters. Competition within the same banking group matters.

Customers value being able to choose between distinct brands that offer different products, experiences and identities. Removing Halifax diminishes that choice and erases a name that has become woven into Britain’s social and economic history.

The Halifax name has survived world wars, economic crises, demutualisation, mergers and the global financial crisis. It has continued to stand proudly on our high streets, helping millions of people buy their first homes, save for their futures and manage their finances. It deserves a future - not a place in the history books.

We recognise that businesses must evolve and modernise. However, modernisation should not come at the expense of heritage where there is no compelling need to do so. Lloyds Banking Group has successfully operated multiple well-known brands for many years, each serving different markets and customer preferences. There is every reason why Halifax can continue to thrive as a distinct brand alongside Lloyds Bank, offering its own products, services and customer experience.

We therefore call on Lloyds Banking Group to urgently reconsider this decision.

We ask the Group to:

  • Halt the planned retirement of the Halifax brand.
  • Retain Halifax as a separate banking brand with its own distinct identity.
  • Continue developing products and services specifically for Halifax customers, recognising that different brands appeal to different people.
  • Protect and celebrate one of Britain’s most historic financial institutions for future generations.

A bank brand cannot simply be recreated once it has been lost. Halifax represents over 173 years of trust, innovation, heritage and customer loyalty. Once this chapter is closed, it can never truly be reopened.

Please reconsider. Keep Halifax alive.
