Hon. Robert Simms MLC requests the Parliament save the post office

The signatures on this petition have doubled since I last provided an update. I am still waiting on a response from Australia Post regarding my letter and this petition. 

Yesterday, the Honourable Robert Simms MLC moved a Motion in Parliament to save our post office.

The Hon. R.A. SIMMS (16:38): I move:

That this council—

1. Condemns Australia Post for the upcoming closure of the Adelaide Business Centre, Shop 1/216 Gouger Street, Adelaide SA 5000, also known as the Gouger Street Post Office, on 30 October 2026;

2. Calls on the Australian government to intervene to reverse the decision to close Gouger Street Post Office;

3. Recognises the vital role that post offices play as an essential service to the local community and businesses; and

4. Supports the residents of the Adelaide City West and their call to retain an accessible service in their local community.

This is a straightforward motion. It condemns Australia Post for the upcoming closure of the Adelaide Business Centre, shop 1/216 Gouger Street, and calls on Australia Post to keep it open, and for the federal government and, indeed, other levels of government to take the action necessary to protect the post office. It is really disappointing for residents in the City of Adelaide to see this post office, and indeed other essential public services, facing closure, and I note there have been other post offices in the city area that have closed down in recent years. I recognise that the Lord Mayor is here in the gallery today. I recognise the work of many of the city councillors in this regard. I understand Councillor Eleanor Freeman has been circulating a petition and I certainly welcome that.

From the Greens' perspective, we really want to see these essential services kept open and we want to see an end to the cost-cutting measures that are being adopted by Australia Post when it comes to these essential services. I urge members to support this motion and send a very clear message around the position of this parliament.
