The Issue

For decades, the Humane Society property in Charlotte County stood as a symbol of compassion, hope, and second chances for animals in need. Today, that same building is sitting condemned, slated for demolition, its legacy at risk of being erased forever.

Journey Kennels Dog Sanctuary, a local nonprofit, is asking for your support to preserve and restore this property. Instead of seeing it torn down and lost, we envision a vibrant sanctuary where abandoned, neglected, and special-needs dogs can find safety, love, and lifelong care.

We are not asking the county for money. Journey Kennels will take full responsibility for the repairs, renovations, and upkeep of the property, funded entirely through donations, grants, and volunteer labor. We will also maintain full liability insurance, ensuring the county bears no risk or financial burden.

By saving and repurposing this site, we can:

*Honor its original mission of helping animals in need.

*Reduce the burden on county shelters and taxpayers.

*Provide volunteer opportunities and community education programs.

*Prevent needless demolition costs and preserve county resources.

*Offer a safe, permanent home for dogs that might otherwise face euthanasia.

This is more than just saving a building, it’s about saving lives, strengthening our community, and keeping compassion alive in Charlotte County.

We call on county leaders to work with Journey Kennels Dog Sanctuary and grant us the opportunity to rehabilitate and use the former Humane Society property as a sanctuary for dogs in need. Together, we can transform this condemned building into a place of healing and hope.

Please sign and share this petition to help us save the Humane Society building and give countless dogs a second chance at life.
