PETITION TO THE DELAVAN-DARIEN BOARD OF EDUCATION

Protect the Delavan-Darien Dual Language Program

As members of the Delavan-Darien School District community, including parents, students, teachers, staff, alumni, and community partners, we are deeply concerned by the proposal presented during the April 13 board meeting that included reducing or eliminating portions of the Dual Language program.

This is an important decision that affects almost half of the district’s student population and could permanently change a program that has been part of our district for 12 years. We believe that one special board session with community input is not enough to make such a significant decision.

When the Dual Language program was originally created, the district spent significant time researching, gathering community input, reviewing best practices, and studying data before implementation. A decision to reduce or eliminate the program deserves the same level of care, transparency, and community participation.

We strongly request the board to:

• Delay any vote to reduce or eliminate the Dual Language program until additional research and community input have been gathered.
• Keep the Dual Language program as it currently exists for the 2026-2027 school year while strengthening staffing, licensure, and long-term planning.
• Preserve the 4K 50/50 model that has helped create a strong oral language foundation for students.
• Immediately appoint a Dual Language Advisory Committee made up of parents, teachers, students, community members, and current Dual Language staff, to develop long-term recommendations for staffing, retention, language allocation, and support systems; and create systems and protocols for program consistency and sustainability.
• Hire a Director of Dual Language, as originally intended when the program was created, who reflects and represents the Hispanic and Latino community.
• Continue implementing the recommendations made by the Center for Applied Linguistics/Center for Bilingual Education evaluation report.

PETICIÓN PARA LA JUNTA EDUCATIVA DE DELAVAN-DARIEN

Protejamos el Programa de Lenguaje Dual de Delavan-Darien

Como miembros de la comunidad del Distrito Escolar de Delavan-Darien, incluyendo padres, estudiantes, maestros, personal, exalumnos y miembros de la comunidad, estamos profundamente preocupados por la propuesta presentada durante la reunión de la junta del 13 de abril que incluyó reducir o eliminar partes del programa de Lenguaje Dual.

Esta es una decisión importante que afecta a casi la mitad de la población estudiantil del distrito y que podría cambiar permanentemente un programa que ha sido parte de nuestro distrito por 12 años. Creemos que una sola sesión especial de la junta no es suficiente para escuchar a la comunidad y tomar una decisión tan significativa.

Cuando el programa de Lenguaje Dual fue creado originalmente, el distrito dedicó mucho tiempo a investigar, recopilar opiniones de la comunidad, revisar mejores prácticas y estudiar datos antes de implementarlo. La decisión de reducir o eliminar el programa merece el mismo nivel de cuidado, transparencia y participación comunitaria.

Solicitamos firmemente a la junta educativa que:

• Retrase cualquier votación para reducir o eliminar el programa de Lenguaje Dual hasta que se recopilen más datos y se involucre más activamente a la comunidad.
• Mantenga el programa de Lenguaje Dual tal como existe actualmente durante el año escolar 2026-2027, mientras se fortalecen la contratación de personal, las licencias y la planificación a largo plazo.
• Preserve el modelo 50/50 de 4K que ha ayudado a crear una base sólida de lenguaje oral para los estudiantes.
• Nombre de inmediato un Comité Asesor de Lenguaje Dual compuesto por padres, maestros, estudiantes, miembros de la comunidad y personal actual del programa de Lenguaje Dual, para desarrollar recomendaciones a largo plazo sobre contratación, retención, distribución del idioma y sistemas de apoyo; y crear sistemas y protocolos para la consistencia y sostenibilidad del programa.
• Contrate a un Director de Lenguaje Dual, como se había planeado originalmente cuando se creó el programa, que refleje y represente a la comunidad hispana y latina.
• Continúe implementando las recomendaciones hechas por el informe de evaluación del Center for Applied Linguistics/Center for Bilingual Education.
