Save The Chinese Programs Across Montgomery County Public Schools

The Issue

Chinese is one of the world's most widely spoken languages, with 1.3 billion native speakers. While interest in learning Chinese is less prevalent in the United States, there is a dedicated community in Montgomery County in Maryland, which we are a part of, very passionate about Chinese culture and language. However, the Chinese language program at Hallie Wells is in dire jeopardy. Despite appeals from staff, students, and parents, the administration remains unresponsive, citing questionable budgetary constraints. This neglect threatens to eliminate Chinese classes across Middle and High schools.

Students currently enrolled in Chinese language courses face uncertainty about their studies and cultural education next year. The livelihoods of dedicated teachers and the educational opportunities of students are on the line. If we do not act now, multiple schools across the county will lose their Chinese language programs for the 2024-2025 school year—and potentially forever.

We urgently need your support to preserve and sustain the Chinese language and culture in Montgomery County Public Schools. Please sign this petition to ensure that future generations of students can continue to learn and appreciate this vital aspect of global heritage.
