After nearly two decades, the effort to save the Century and Consumers Buildings at 202 S. State and 220 S. State is on the verge of a major breakthrough.

The Century and Consumers Buildings are back on the agenda for consideration for Preliminary Chicago Landmark Designation on Thursday afternoon!

Preservation Chicago and preservation partners will attend the hearing to testify in strong support of Chicago Landmark Designation.

Last summer, the City of Chicago Commission on Chicago Landmark report had definitively confirmed that the buildings were landmark eligible, but stopped short of taking a vote. 

But when the GSA announced the emergency demolition of the adjacent 208-212 S. State Building in the middle of the Section 106 process, concerns became heightened.

A Preliminary Chicago Landmark Designation would send a clear message that the City of Chicago highly values these historic buildings and wants to see them saved and revitalized. 

It would be a tragic mistake for $52 million taxpayers dollars to be used to demolish two outstanding Early Chicago Skyscrapers in the heart of historic  State Street.

The widely reported Chicago Collaborative Archives Center adaptive reuse plan meets or exceeds all security related issues and stakeholders are motivated to move forward.

Chicago’s Early Chicago Skyscrapers are currently being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But the demolition of the Century and Consumers Buildings could jeopardize this extraordinary designation and international recognition.

Now is the time to landmark these significant Early Chicago Skyscrapers in the heart of Chicago so that they can be restored and once again contribute to the vibrancy of the Loop.
