Wakefield Park Cycleway and Parking Draft Plan to be released this week.

Draft plans for the cycleway past Wakefield Park will be released for public consultation this week. Drop into the IBU clubrooms at Wakefield this Saturday between 9am and 12 noon to see the plan, chat to the planners and give your personal feedback.

The Wakefield Sports Clubs Group recently had a sneak peek at the draft plan.  WCC planners are working hard to meet our demands that the existing number of carparks be retained, by creating an equal number of off-road parks.  But the proof will be in the pudding, and there may still be significant changes to parking that we will need to feedback on.

What we know so far about this section of the cycleway:

• There will be no downhill cycle lane from Berhampore. Bikes will travel faster downhill and have a right of way in the traffic. Most parks on this side of the road are retained.
• The uphill cycle lane- closest to the Park- is separated from parked cars by concrete buffers, as in the current Island Bay Cycleway. Some parks retained.
• Bus stops (up and downhill) will be moved to the either side of the existing pedestrian crossing. This will take away parks next to and opposite the clubrooms/changing rooms.
• New parks will be created by extending the area at the rear of the top driveway leading from Olympic Clubrooms.
• A block of around 15 parks will be created on the left hand side of Dover Street.
• Most parks on both sides of the Parade from Dover to Dee St will go.
• A few parks will be created in the current bus turnaround near Dover Street.
