Bridge Signs and Next phase

Now that NYS DOT has officially declared that the Nelson Avenue Extension bridge will remain open and “maintained,” we can take down the “Save the Bridge” signs. Please hold on to them or drop them off at Balet Flowers & Design, as this is simply the first phase of our victory. It is imperative that we continue to convey the message to NYS DOT to set a timeline for “replacement” of the bridge. While they plan to “keep it up” they stated previously that it is of a type of construction that cannot be maintained over the years, but must eventually be “replaced.” When DOT Regional Director Sam Zhou was asked if the Nelson Avenue Extension bridges would be a topic at the informational, he stated, “Now that we have made the decision to replace two bridges and keep the Nelson Ave. Ext. bridge open, the project team is revising the scope of the proposed capital project. The public information will focus on the bridge replacements of the Crescent Avenue and East High Street bridges. Of course, we will take questions regarding Nelson Ave Ext bridge if any.” We believe it is still imperative that you attend DOT’s informational meeting (time and date TBA) to thank them for reversing their decision to tear down the bridge, but also to let them know that a timeline needs to be set for “replacement” of the bridge. (I will notify you when DOT sets a date for the meeting.) Our next phase will focus on working with our elected officials to find the funds for the bridge replacement and to work with DOT officials to set a timeline for future replacement. Thank you for your support. Marie, Suzanne & Committee
