Our communities organized and fought for the blue dot, and now John Cavanaugh is putting it all at risk to advance his own political career. 

Every vote in Nebraska’s unicameral is critical. Issues like protecting the Blue Dot (Nebraska’s split electoral vote), redistricting, protecting access to abortion, minimum wage increases, and public school funding have all come down to the most slim margins. Sen. John Cavanaugh was elected in 2024 and his voters expected him to serve in the role until 2028.

Now he is running for Congress which means he would leave the seat, resulting in Governor Pillen appointing a MAGA replacement, putting so much at risk for Nebraska. This is particularly true of Nebraska’s split electoral vote, the Blue Dot, which thousands of Nebraskans rallied to protect in 2024.

Senator Cavanaugh’s vote in the legislature is too important to sacrifice. The implications of Sen. Cavanaugh vacating his seat is very likely to impact future elections, giving Trump and Pillen an easier path to accomplishing their stated goals of weakening voting rights, defunding public schools, and making reproductive care harder to access. 

The stakes are simply too high.
