The Issue

Though required by Arizona state education code, in 2022 28% of Arizona's 2,229 traditional and charter schools offer no arts programs.  That means there are 1.13 million Arizona students have no access to Arts programs. Arts programs are being cut in public and charter schools because of reduced budgets and less class time.

Arts are important because they help with public speaking and self-confidence. Participation in the Arts increase student's performance in math, reading, and standardized testing. Arts courses are linked to better literacy skills. Disciplinary problems in schools are reduced as art courses are increased. Studying arts helps students recognize good art versus poor art. Studying the arts increases students' attention spans which helps them when they are older, to help the community and to do their job. Students who have arts programs in schools would enjoy school and look forward to being in school which would reduce drop outs and increase graduation rates.

As part of the First Lego League Challenge we, the Robotics Club at Veritas Christian Community School, were asked to create an Innovation Project for the 2023 competition. We researched and found the upsetting statistics about art programs in public and charter schools. We would like Arizona's Governor Katie Hobbs to ensure the education budget of Arizona supports bring Arts into ALL Arizona public and charter schools. We are enrolled in a classical school which knows the importance of studying the Arts. We believe ALL Arizona students should have that opportunity. Thank you for taking the time to sign our petition.
