Mise à jour sur la pétitionSave the Alexandra Canal Cycleway'Stuff the bike riders': WestConnex downgrades bike path to part-time

Thank you for signing our petition!  It's great to see such strong community support for improving walking and cycling in Sydney!

Despite state government policies that all new motorway projects should be complemented by safe and separated bike paths, support for people cycling is often the first to be compromised.

Today's SMH:

A city-bound bike path that was to have offered a separated route toward the central business district along the WestConnex motorway will be closed to cyclists when Sydney Olympic Park is busy.

“WestConnex has known about this issue. They should have provided a proper overpass or alternative,” Bicycle NSW’s advocacy consultant Ray Rice said. “It’s a case of take the easy way out and stuff the bike riders.”

This shows why we must use our voices to maintain pressure on our transport authorities and construction companies to ensure safe provision for people walking and cycling.

The Sydney Gateway project has promised a replacement Alexandra Canal cycleway / pathway, but what quality will it be?  Will it connect to where people need to go?  Will it also be closed at peak times?

What can you do?

  1. Continue sharing the petition around your networks (including those who are supportive but don't currently use this path), and
  2. Write to your State MPs to urge that a quality connection is funded, constructed and maintained during and after construction.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support!

P.S.  Some of you may seen the counters located along the path, we're not sure whether this is part of the project, but if so, we hope they are collecting good data about the number of people who use this pathway who will be affected by its disruption.
