The Issue

BusConnects Phase 6a - E spine is being introduced, and the 145, 155, and 46a (amongst others) are being replaced. All services except the 145 are being replaced.

See Phase 6a:

This may seem like a minor issue - but it will have effects.

Who is affected?

  • According to the NTA (National Transport Authority) over 7 Million journeys are generated commuting to UCD every year.
  • Thousands of UCD commuting students have heavily relied upon the 145 for their commutes that pass through Heuston Station.
  • Students who commute by train that terminates in Heuston Station are already spending 1+ hours commuting from their homes, to their respective train stops, to Heuston Station, and then spending 40+ (generally another hour during peak time)  mins on the 145 bus service.
  • This new phase in public transport has not replaced the direct access students have from Heuston Station to UCD.

Why does it matter?

  • Let's face it - nobody enjoys commuting. Due to the cost of living and housing crisis and general limited availability of accommodation, this has left thousands of students to commute to UCD campus.
  • It may not seem like much, but if students will have to take an extra bus service (the S2) and a second service (presumably the new E1 or E2 services) this is going to add an already existing strain on students, taking even more time away from their educational and social lives.

Why now?

  • I think it goes for saying for most students that nobody knew the 145 service was not being replaced. The new phase comes into effect on the 8th of December - so there is still time to act.

What is wanted?

  • Ultimately a reinstatement of the direct route from Heuston to UCD Campus would be preferred, whether this is a reinstatement of a 145 route, the diversion of an existing bus service, or even a new bus service, it would go a very long way in helping day to day student life.

Again, it may not seem like a major issue, but to thousands of college students - it very much is.
