The Issue

Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) is considering the closure of Sugar Mill Elementary School due to underutilization. This decision will profoundly impact our community, particularly the students, parents, and educators who are part of the Sugar Mill family.

Closing a school is not merely about dealing with immediate underutilization; it's about evaluating the long-term repercussions on educational quality, community spirit, and local property values.

Sugar Mill Elementary has been a cornerstone of our community since it's opening in 1984, providing quality education and fostering a nurturing environment where children thrive. Its closure would necessitate students attending other schools, leading to overcrowding, longer commutes, and the loss of a familiar, supportive educational setting they love and are accustomed to.

Sugar Mill Elementary stands in a unique position to grow alongside the community as Fort Bend develops and evolves. With a thoughtful approach, including increased local engagement, strategic partnerships, and investment in programs that attract new students, FBISD could utilize innovative solutions to address the underutilization problem while keeping the school open. For instance, promoting specialized programs such as STEM or fine arts integration could attract more families looking for such focused education for their children.

Sugar Mill Elementary is a vital community hub, and closing our school would weaken community bonds and take away a space that unites families and neighbors.

We urge FBISD to reconsider this decision by proposing alternative strategies to boost enrollment and maximize the school’s potential. The future of our children and community depends on the actions we take today.
