Save Subhan Masjid Scarborough
The Issue
Subhan Masjid Scarborough has been a cornerstone for the Muslim community in Scarborough, Toronto, for 17 years. Serving over 500 people, the mosque stands not only as a place of worship but also as a center of community, education, and support. The mosque offers five daily prayers, 2 Weekly Jumu'ah ( Friday ) prayers, Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, hosts Ramadan iftar programs, conducts two Eid prayers annually, Tajweed/Quran classes for Kids/Adults including separate classes for Sisters, and holds a weekly spiritual guidance program every Friday. Additionally, it organizes periodic, scheduled programs covering the spiritual and mental health for adults ( both men and women), youth and kids.
Despite its invaluable contributions, the mosque is now facing the threat of demolition. RioCan Management Inc. has served notice to terminate the lease on September 19, 2026, and evacuate the building, while extending the leases of other properties within the same plot. This leaves the Subhan Masjid without a home or a plan for relocation.
The importance of Subhan Masjid extends beyond its walls. It acts as a haven for community members, where friendships form, spiritual growth happens, and cultural celebrations are embraced. It is a pillar in the lives of many, providing a safe space for Muslims in Scarborough to gather, learn, and thrive.
We urge RioCan Management Inc. to reconsider their decision and extend the lease for Subhan Masjid Scarborough, allowing it to continue serving the community until an alternative permanent location is found. The abrupt closure of the mosque will disrupt the lives of hundreds of community members, leaving them without a critical facility that services their spiritual, social, and mental needs.
