Pasadena Deserves Responsible Development for 1364 E. Green St

Pasadena Deserves Responsible Development for 1364 E. Green St
The Issue
For over a century, this Pasadena neighborhood has been home to families, and cherished community institutions. Today, that legacy is at risk. A massive commercial development proposed directly beside a historic church and TK–8 school, and across the street from a daycare, residential homes, and a landmark library building sets a dangerous precedent for commercial expansion into residential neighborhoods across Pasadena.
Caltech and its multi-billion dollar real estate partner, Trammell Crow, are planning a massive 93,500+ square-foot, 4-story commercial research complex for big pharmaceutical corporations with three levels of underground parking adding 260 cars to already congested neighborhood streets.
Without any meaningful community engagement, Caltech purchased the corner lot and rezoned it to accommodate this for-profit commercial project.
This massive building will directly loom over homes and institutions, eliminate green space, worsen congestion, and permanently alter the character and design of this historic neighborhood, raising serious safety concerns—especially for the hundreds of young children who attend school and daycare just steps away. Yet traffic, safety, and environmental impacts specific to building at this sensitive location have still not been fully studied.
We support responsible development in Pasadena. What we are asking for is thoughtful planning and the right location for a project of this scale and purpose—not next door to children, historic institutions, and family neighborhoods.
Join us in calling for a better outcome for the 1364 E. Green St project. We support development in Pasadena when it is right-sized, appropriately located, and thoughtfully planned. As currently proposed, the City Council’s rezoning and Caltech’s plans for a large, for-profit complex raise unresolved concerns about safety, traffic, environmental impacts, and neighborhood compatibility—impacts that local families and the broader community would ultimately bear.
We urge the City to require responsible development by completing full safety, traffic, environmental, and community impact studies and by ensuring meaningful resident engagement before any approvals move forward.
There are better, safer, and more positive solutions—ones that can restore trust and put our children, neighborhoods, and Pasadena's long-term well-being first.
