Save Social Security!

The Issue

Social Security is under attack, threatening the financial security of millions of hard working Americans who have paid into Social Security with every paycheck throughout their lives. About 70 million US citizens receive Social Security. Any cuts to these earned benefits would be devastating and break a fundamental promise to the American people.

Decreasing or ending Federal Social Security benefits would leave millions of people at risk of poverty and homelessness. For many retired Americans, disabled workers, and surviving family members, these benefits are their primary or only source of income.

Some argue, "People should have saved and invested privately." But we already invested 6.2% of our income into Social Security! How can teachers, nurses, truck drivers, cashiers, and countless other hardworking Americans save additional money when struggling with the high cost of living and mounting medical bills?

The Social Security Act of 1935 established a promise to American workers. For 90 years, Social Security has provided a crucial safety net for generations of Americans. Dismantling this system would betray millions of people who have faithfully contributed to their Social Security throughout their working lives.

Some Congress members want to close Social Security, our money, to cut down on government spending. Meanwhile, billionaires receive hefty tax breaks, some billion dollar corporations receive government subsidies, and millionaire Congress members receive lifelong pensions at 80% of their salary.

These same lawmakers, enjoying multiple government retirement benefits, are now discussing cuts to Social Security for everyday Americans.

We call on Congress to:

  • Guarantee the full protection of Social Security benefits and reject any proposals reducing payments to current or future recipients.

  • Pass legislation to eliminate the cap on Social Security payroll taxes, ensuring that high-income earners contribute their fair share on all their earnings. That change would add hundreds of billions to Social Security's trust fund and not affect people making less than 176k annually.

  • Reject any attempts to privatize or divert Social Security funds to other purposes.

  • Serve the millions of hardworking Americans who built and maintain this country, including the people who trusted you with their vote.

Taking away our pre-paid safety net is morally indefensible.
