Save Scout's Island

Petition to Save Scout’s Island

To the Residents and Council of Sturgeon Falls, ON, Canada:
We, the undersigned, express our strong opposition to the sale of Scout’s Island. This decision has profound implications for our community, our environment, and the wildlife that calls this island home.

Sturgeon Falls is surrounded by water, yet access to these natural resources is increasingly restricted.

Consider the following:

Minnehaha Bay: Millions were spent on development, yet it is fenced off to the public.
The Legion near the Dams: A 125+ year-old gathering place and fishing spot for locals, now fenced off and poorly maintained. Overgrown brush and trees obscure our view of the river.
Future Concerns: With the new bridge, what will happen to our precious little Lookout? Are we going to lose that too?

These changes have diminished the appeal of our community, reducing tourist visits that once thrived during summer and winter months for fishing, hunting, and camping.

Key Concerns with the Sale of Scout’s Island:

Property Value and Taxes: Many of us invested in our homes here for the unique view and privacy that Scout’s Island provides. We pay substantial taxes for these benefits, and the sale of the island threatens to decrease our property values.
Wildlife Habitat: Scout’s Island is a vital habitat for diverse species, including a diverse variety of birds, cranes, ducks, geese, loons, otters, muskrats, turtles and other little animals. These animals rely on this island for breeding and shelter. Displacing them would be a significant loss to local biodiversity, especially given the ongoing reduction of natural habitats.

Community Enjoyment and Potential: Instead of selling, we propose utilizing the island’s potential for community benefit. The opposite side of the island could be developed into a community picnic area with swings and tables, a fishing spot for those without boats, or a venue for special occasions.
Community Involvement: We suggest that the Council form an ADHOC committee with citizen involvement to develop an action plan for the island’s sustainable use, ensuring it remains a cherished part of our community.

Call to Action:
Please join us in urging the Sturgeon Falls Council to reconsider the sale and explore alternative ways to preserve and utilize Scout’s Island for the benefit of both residents and wildlife. Your signature can make a difference in protecting this precious natural resource.
