Save Sandwich Small Businesses and Festivals from Crushing Charges

The Issue

Sandwich Town Council are trying to charge up to £300 a day to use the Guildhall Forecourt. It has been a free, public space for local organisations for years. This change is wrong.

Chapter 1: Community
Our small businesses and vibrant local festivals are the backbone of our charming town’s community. For decades they have brought us joy, culture and economic benefits. Our quaint streets lined with unique shops and lively festivals that grace our calendar help to define what makes Sandwich special.

Chapter 2: The Threat to Our Heritage
However, there is a storm brewing on the horizon. Sandwich Town Council is planning on introducing exorbitant charges of up to £300 a day for our cherished local events and festivals. These charges pose a grave threat to the community groups running them and jeopardises the future of the town’s small businesses and our beloved festivals.

Chapter 3: A Barren Forecourt
On top of the proposed charges an additional cost of £50 per table and £50 per chair is to be levied on businesses with seating on the forecourt. The Sandwich Shop, a family-owned establishment which has been serving delectable sandwiches with a warm smile for years, is now facing a £2,500 yearly bill. An unexpected financial burden like this will force businesses and events away.

Chapter 4: Council Accountability
As we look closer, it becomes apparent the Town Council’s actions are far from transparent. It is troubling to see taxpayers, community groups and small businesses forced to balance the books for the failures of the last 12 months under Sandwich Matters. Where was the public consultation? The engagement with local organisations? Sandwich taxes paid for the Guildhall Forecourt re-design, and is now being made to pay for it again.

Chapter 5: Call to Action
We cannot allow this to happen. Our town’s character, livelihoods, and the legacy of small businesses and events are all at stake. We must unite to protect our heritage and local economy from these crushing charges. The goal of this petition is clear: we urge Sandwich Town Council to reconsider and eliminate the proposed charges.

Conclusion:
In Sandwich, we cherish our local businesses and the cultural richness of our festivals. Together, we can save them from these crippling charges and shine a light on the financial mismanagement that burdens our community. By signing this petition, you are helping to preserve the heart and soul of our beloved town and holding the Town Council accountable for their actions.
