Save San Jose State Track-President Papzian Please Build the Track As Promised!

The Issue

Two years ago we watched from the crowd as the University invited Track & Field LEGENDS to campus to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Olympics. A big to-do was made about bringing SJSU Mens T&F back and building a track. We've now learned that NO Fundraising Plan was ever created. It was never created at all and the University now holds that they can't afford to build a track because they don't have the funds--Well newsflash, you can't generate funds if you never had a plan in the first place. Numerous successful plans and campaigns for other sports are proudly touted by the President and AD and yet one of the most legendary and historically influential teams (SJSU Track and Field) doesn't even get the respect of a fundraising campaign? Terribly disappointing. We arent sure if they ever intended to build the track and feel they have not been transparent about the ongoing and lengthy negotiations to turn the site into a parking garage. This is counter to what was said at the 50th anniversary event and to everyone publicly for the last two years. We all know a project of this size does not simply get negotiated over a period of a two months.

These legends and this program deserves to be honored.

The history and future of SJSU Track & Field is being erased before our eyes.

Alumni and students should not have to walk past a mega parking structure (that SJSU students paid for) just so the fans of the professional hockey and baseball team's fans have a luxury parking garage.

Student's/team and alumni were promised a new track and field facility and instead they get their land taken and handed over to professional teams that can afford to build their own parking structure.

From Mercury News- Nov 6, 2017- Supporters heard talk last week that the existing plot, which houses a decaying track oval, was to be used as a parking facility.

“That is false,” Athletic Director Marie Tuite said. “We are in discussions as far as a permanent site for our men’s and women’s track program. The current footprint of the track is not going to be turned in a full-fledged parking structure.”

Promises were made and now those promises have been broken- We urgently need your help!
