One person has questioned the accuracy of the photo we've used to illustrate this petition. We are not scaremongering.
The photo to the right is an impression of a nine storey building that might be permitted near the the corner of Matai St West and Straven Rd if PC14 is approved as the city council is proposing.
PC14 proposes 28 metre tall buildings be allowed in this area all the way down to Blenheim Rd; the same height currently allowed in the CBD.
To work out how many storeys that might be, city planners tell us to allow three metres per storey and add two metres for a pitched roof on top. 28 metres would be eight (or even nine) storeys.

Matai St West, in particular, deserves protection.
- It is part of an historic area of Riccarton - Putarikamotu, part of the original Deans family farm, and the founding borough of Christchurch
- The street is narrow with very limited on-street parking
- It is tree-lined with a grass berm
- A dedicated uni-cycleway runs its entire length from the railway line to Straven Rd
- The street runs east to west. Tall buildings on the north side would entirely shade the south side during winter, except in early morning and late afternoon
- Many private properties boast mature trees most of which are not protected and are fast disappearing
- Despite development the street still features some great examples of early 20th century architecture
- The historic Britten Stables is at the eastern end across the tracks from Mona Vale
- The western end is just one block from Riccarton Bush and Grounds
