Subject: Please Keep Recycled Reads Open – A Vital Resource for Our Community

Dear Austin City Council Members,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed closure of Recycled Reads, Austin Public Library’s beloved used bookstore and sustainability hub. Recycled Reads is far more than just a bookstore — it is a model of environmental responsibility, educational access, and community enrichment that embodies the very spirit of Austin.

According to recent reports, Recycled Reads is at risk of being shut down due to city budget cuts. While we understand the difficult decisions involved in balancing the budget, eliminating this vital resource would be a mistake with long-term negative consequences.

Recycled Reads plays a critical role in the city’s Zero Waste initiative, giving books and library materials a second life while diverting tons of material from landfills each year. Recycled Reads helped the library divert over 35 tons of material from the waste stream. It also processes books withdrawn from the library collection and donations from the public, reselling them at affordable prices or responsibly recycling what cannot be sold.

Additionally, Recycled Reads provides:

Affordable access to books and media for people of all ages and income levels.
Volunteer opportunities for those in the community to give back.
A unique community gathering space that reflects Austin’s values of literacy, creativity, and sustainability.

Closing Recycled Reads would not only mean the loss of a deeply valued resource, but also undermine Austin’s environmental goals and the mission of the Austin Public Library.

Please consider the voices of the many Austinites who cherish Recycled Reads — not only as a place to find a good book, but as a community institution that reflects what makes our city special.

We urge you to keep Recycled Reads open and find alternative solutions that preserve its operations and impact.

Sincerely,
