Save Proxy

The Issue

Website: saveproxy.org

Supervisor Dean Preston is actively working to eliminate Proxy and turn it into approximately 50 units of housing as a political ploy during this upcoming Supervisor election. This housing project would dissolve eight local businesses including LuxFit Gym, Ritual Coffee, Juice Shop, San Francisco Hometown Creamery, Aether Apparel, Biergarten and Mmclay Ceramics. It would convert this beloved neighborhood gathering space into a small number of housing units.

Proxy has become a cherished fixture of the Hayes Valley community. It is the heartbeat of the neighborhood. Saving Proxy means continuing to allow neighborhood events to take place including movie nights, jazz concerts, carnivals, dance parties, street fairs and seating for gatherings of friends and family.

If we do not act now, all of these businesses, events and community which have made Hayes Valley one of the best neighborhoods in the world will be eliminated. In a recent poll, 74% of neighborhood respondents voted they wanted to save Proxy. 62% were not aware that Proxy is in danger of being eliminated for housing. Awareness is power so please spread the word.

Disclaimer: Our opposition likes to lazily claim that this effort is "NIMBY". On the contrary, unlike our Supervisor who has blocked housing all over the city and all over Hayes Valley, we want housing built throughout SF and throughout our neighborhood including both affordable housing and market rate housing. We want housing built all over our backyard, on all of the vacant / unused lots like 300 Octavia, the DMV site, the parking lot on Franklin, 78 Haight, and more :) Just not on this one shared, community gathering space that has so much value for so many people. Shared spaces AND housing can co-exist in amazing ways. We don't need to choose between the two.

I'd ask our opposition if we are NIMBY's then why are you not pushing for housing on all of the vacant lots in the neighborhood which would generate thousands of affordable housing units? Guess it's hard to start a counter-campaign against us for those sites considering we supported affordable housing in our backyard before you did. In fact, the organizers have all advocated for large housing projects far closer to our homes than this site. Our District Supervisor has turned this site into a political football to combat his anti-housing record where he has blocked nearly 9,000 housing units but thinks building 50 units in this one location somehow makes up for the thousands of others he has blocked in our neighborhood.
