For years, many good fathers have been unfairly disadvantaged by laws governing parental rights, often as a result of relationship conflicts unrelated to their ability to parent. Research shows that giving fathers equal custody, or 50/50 time with their children, benefits families and communities. In states where 50/50 custody is common, divorce rates have dropped by up to 25%. Denying fathers this opportunity can contribute to ongoing “daddy issues,” which ultimately harm children. Bill SB849 aims to promote equal custody rights, but it stalled after the legislative session ended. Renewed support is crucial to strengthen father-child relationships and ensure children benefit from active parenting by both parents.
