The Polish community in Canada needs your help to save an iconic cultural landmark - the "Katedra pod Sosnami" (Cathedral Under the Pines) in Polish Kaszuby, near Barry's Bay Ontario. It is scheduled to be replaced this fall with a new structure.

Built on the serene shores of Wadsworth Lake in the 1950's, the Katedra pod Sosnami has been a place of worship, a beacon of joy, and a little piece of Poland in Canada. It is a priceless piece of Polish history and heritage which has brought together people of all ages and backgrounds. Every year, locals, visitors, and scouts come to offer their prayers to God before the likeness of Mary ("Czarna Madonna"). The cathedral hosts thousands of visitors each year for outdoor masses and other events. It is a spiritual and magical place which holds a very special place in the hearts of those who have been lucky enough to see it, and it must be preserved for future generations. 

The community raised tens of thousands of dollars for what they were told would be a renewal of the cathedral. However, it was later announced that instead, the cathedral, along with its iconic portrait of the Czarna Madonna, would be replaced by a different structure. There is no need to change the structure of this landmark which is so important to the Polish community. While appreciating that renewal and structural integrity is needed, many would like to see the cathedral rebuilt in its original style. Update: it has come to our attention that the plans have now been changed and that following voiced opposition to the new portrait, the original portrait of the Madonna will remain. Decision makers have also agreed to keep the structure a wood colour. While these are positive developments, there are many who still do not agree with the new proposed aesthetic of the structure and wish to rebuild the cathedral in its original style.

Zbudowana na spokojnym brzegu jeziora Wadsworth w latach 50-tych Katedra pod Sosnami była miejscem kultu, latarnią radości i małym kawałkiem Polski w Kanadzie. To bezcenny kawałek polskiej historii i dziedzictwa, który połączył ludzi w każdym wieku i z różnych środowisk. Co roku mieszkańcy, przyjezdni i harcerze przybywają, by zanieść swoje modlitwy do Boga przed obrazem Maryi („Czarna Madonna”). Katedra co roku gości tysiące gości na msze plenerowe i inne imprezy. Jest to duchowe i magiczne miejsce, które zajmuje szczególne miejsce w sercach tych, którzy mieli szczęście je zobaczyć, i musi zostać zachowane dla przyszłych pokoleń.

Aktualizacja: dowiedzieliśmy się, że plany zostały zmienione i że w związku ze sprzeciwem wobec nowego portretu oryginalny portret Madonny pozostanie. Decydenci zgodzili się również na zachowanie w konstrukcji koloru drewna. Chociaż są to pozytywne zmiany, jest wielu, którzy nadal nie zgadzają się z nową proponowaną estetyką konstrukcji i chcą odbudować katedrę w jej oryginalnym stylu.
