Save PlayStation physical games
The Issue
Physical games have been an integral part of the console gaming experience since the very beginning. Being able to buy a favorite game and place it on a shelf as part of a personal collection is a unique feeling that adds character and value to the hobby of playing video games.
Unfortunately, Sony has announced that starting in January 2028, it will end the production of physical PlayStation game releases. This would completely remove the freedom of choice for players who prefer to purchase their games in physical format.
Physical games are not merely an optional extra. They are an important part of preserving video game history, sharing games with friends, and truly owning the products we purchase. As the years go by, consumers are increasingly losing these freedoms as more decisions are shifted entirely toward digital distribution.
It is also important to remember that stable, high-speed internet access is still not available everywhere in the world. Physical releases have often helped bridge that gap by allowing players to access game data directly from the disc. Eliminating physical editions removes an important alternative for consumers and leaves PlayStation Store as the only option for purchasing new games, potentially reducing price competition and consumer choice.
The end of physical games would not only be a blow to collectors and players who value independence from online services. It would also be a major setback for retail stores that rely on physical game sales, potentially leading to job losses and marking the end of a long-standing part of gaming culture.
The situation is made even more concerning by Sony's decision to close the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita. This demonstrates that digital storefronts are not permanent and cannot guarantee that games will remain available for purchase years into the future.
This is not simply about lending games to friends or reselling used copies. It is about CHOICE.
Millions of people around the world still buy physical games, as demonstrated by strong sales figures and sold-out physical editions of major releases such as Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata. Players still want the freedom to choose how they purchase their games and the ability to truly own them without being entirely dependent on online services controlled by a single store operator.
We urge Sony to reconsider this decision and continue supporting physical media alongside digital distribution. Freedom of choice should remain one of the core principles of gaming.
Taking that choice away contradicts the spirit of the slogan "Play Has No Limits."
