Hutt City Council voted $12M to keep the Wharf as part of its Long Term Plan in 2024. They appointed an experienced engineer to advise on options for repair within that budget. He has advised that most of the wharf can be saved, with a small part of the end of the head likely having to be demolished. Council officers' analysis still suggests that demolition could be a good option, and we are concerned that the process for repairing the Wharf looks to be drawn out over several years. This would mean that the money won't go so far, the wharf will continue to deteriorate, and the people who love the wharf and desperately want to get back onto it are not being listened to.
A report goes to the Communities, Culture and Partnerships Committee on Wednesday afternoon, 30th April, at 2pm, and we would love to have a show of strength from the people who supported us last year, and from anyone else you can bring along. If you live locally and can come along to the Council Chambers at 2pm, please come and join us. There will be a full Council meeting in May and we will be asking for support then as well.
