Save Perkins Park from a Dividing Parking Lot

The Issue

The calming view across Perkins Park could be a thing of the past if the City of Warren goes ahead with the proposal to continue the asphalt from Perkins Drive NW across the center of the grass, forming a 200-car parking lot eyesore.

While there are other matters pertaining to the park and park safety which should be addressed, this petition is solely for the purpose of voicing community opposition to the proposal to split the park with a parking lot. More can be read at http://safeperkins.wordpress.com

For the handfuls of summer days each year where the park is at full capacity due to sports games, the destruction of a historical grassy oasis would be a tragic loss of green space both to the city as a whole and to the local residents who use the park multiple times daily, year-round. While many locals spoken to have immediately drawn connections to amphitheatre parking, the amp should be completely separate to anything pertaining to the community space at Perkins Park.

While safety has been given as a reason for this parking development, the biggest danger at the park is from speeding vehicles, not stationary ones. In this regard, the existing park laws need to be clearly displayed, respected, and enforced.

It is also important to consider that by creating a parking lot in the proposed location, the entrance to the park is at high risk of becoming a 4-way intersection - perhaps the most dangerous place for any pedestrian.

If parking for the huge minority of the year is a priority, there are existing parking areas around the perimeter of the park which could be connected and therefore expanded. This would provide more subtle shaded parking, located in closer proximity to the individual sports grounds.

The environmental implications, while small from a global perspective, should not be ignored.

So far, there has been no resident within walking distance to the park who says that they were approached for their experiences and/or input on this matter.

It is imperative that each concerned individual make their voice heard NOW, as based on past experience, it would sadly not be unexpected to find groundwork suddenly beginning one day, unannounced.
