The Issue

In a new proposed policy at Yorktown High School, there is a possibility that our choice of classroom during Patriot Period will be revoked.

In addition, the proposal would include one allocated day each week (Wednesday) for clubs. The rest of the days, students will be forced to go into their normal Patriot Period classes (also called advisory).

When there's only one day a week for clubs, high schoolers lose out on the opportunity to participate in them. On top of all the rigorous coursework that students have to juggle with sports and other extracurriculars, Patriot Period may be the only time to indulge in those interests.

No student should have to choose between their passions or interests. All students should feel like they can have a high school experience that aligns with their values and time.

If this is implemented, we could lose that ability.

Another problem lies in group projects. Many students utilize Patriot Period as a means of working together, completing homework, studying, and being overall productive students. If this opportunity is lost, students may fall behind on these crucial aspects of the group project experience.

Teachers? They're affected too. Without the easy ability to call students to their rooms during this time, the new system could also create fatigue for teachers and staff.

By keeping the system we maintained last year, the best balance between administrative logistics and student/staff happiness will be achieved.

By signing this petition, we can move one step closer to making our voices heard: and preventing a year full of struggle, impossible choices, and regret.
