At a time when Cop28 is taking place Sheffield City Council plan to build on Phase 2 of Owlthorpe Grassland Grazing Project. This would require access to the site for both construction equipment and the residents of the new housing.
This cannot be achieved without the destruction of hedgerows that had been managed under the Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship Scheme and classified by Natural England as of “High Environmental Value”.
One of the ancient hedgerows runs diagonally across the centre of the site along the approximate route of the historic tramway of the now closed Moorhole Colliery.
All of the other hedgerows around the perimeter of the site were newly planted, with the help of over 150 local primary (elementary) school children, before 2012.
The funding of new hedgerows came from Sheffield City Council’s Ward Pot for Carbon Sequestration.
