The Issue

"After school I went to my favourite place, the Westdene Library and came back with a company of demi-gods. Today I am going again, hoping to sail the seven seas with a pirate crew." - Pupil, Year 5

"The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library." - Albert Einstein

Westdene Library is a much loved and vital community resource being threatened by closure by Brighton and Hove Council to save money. It is currently reduced to being open just one day a week. Now the council say people simply aren’t using it but we say we want our library back!

It is a very special place where children discover the magic of reading, develop vital skills and grow their confidence. It is a much valued quiet haven for us adults away from our busy lives. The library is a fully accessible, warm, welcoming place everyone can enjoy and combats loneliness which is on the rise. Westdene library was built so that our neighbourhood could meet, read, learn and explore. It is ideally situated near bus stops and Westdene Primary School and Nursery. Libraries save over three times what they cost. With the cost of living crisis it is needed now more than ever. The library is an irreplaceable asset which simply cannot be lost.

So many libraries are thriving across the UK so let’s join them. Our library is an amazing community hub for all of us. We could have mother and baby groups, craft sessions, carer coffee mornings, IT skill sessions, make new friends and more. The library is truly the heart of our community.

Together, we stand to prevent the closure of our Westdene Library to ensure it continues to foster a love of learning, belonging and friendship as it has for decades. Please sign below to help protect our library now and for future generations!
