Update 12 November, 2023
Following the advice of Transport Minister Jo Haylen that “the linear design …. has been determined to proceed with construction to commence in 2024 (and is) the NSW Government’s final position in relation to the matter”, it is reported that her boss, state Premier Chris Minns, will deliver the Bradfield Oration later this month. (Daily Telegraph, 6 Nov 2023)
The Bradfield Oration is an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Dr J.J.C. Bradfield who had a deep love for Sydney and his boundless faith in the potential of Australia. His vision and memory are best represented by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a structure recognised and admired around the world. The Bradfield Oration is a chance for all of us to draw inspiration from his example as we seek to plan and build a better future for all Australians.
Bradfield Park in Milsons Point, was vested in perpetuity to the people of North Sydney, to be held in trust by the Council of the Municipality of North Sydney, for public parks and for public recreation. Bradfield Park is a rare green space in one of the most densely settled parts of Sydney. From it can be appreciated the visual sweep of the railway viaduct and the approaches, pylons and arch of the bridge itself. Council must defend its property.
So, in 2 months the state government will watch as bulldozers and chain saws desecrate the park and commence the linear cycle ramp, destroying the heritage aspects of the Bridge and its locality.
We must continue to protest the folly of a linear ramp and the sense in the Community Cycle Ramp.
