One year on: more than 108,000 signatures

One year ago today, on 6 August 2025, I launched this petition calling for urgent action to save Britain's red squirrels from extinction.

Today, more than 108,000 people have signed.

What began as a petition has become something much bigger, bringing together conservationists, campaigners and members of the public across the country who refuse to accept the loss of this iconic native species.

Today, Living North Magazine has marked the first anniversary of Save Our Reds with this wonderful four-page feature, telling the story of the campaign from its beginnings to our growing work on policy, public awareness and practical conservation. They have very kindly given me permission to share it with you here.

But this anniversary belongs to all of you.

Thank you to everyone who has signed the petition, shared it, written to an MP, offered encouragement or helped spread the word. We simply could not have reached this point without you.

I also wanted to share these two wonderful collages featuring some of the entries received for our People's Banknote Collection. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to create and send us something. The imagination, talent and affection for our red squirrels have been genuinely uplifting, and these are just a small selection of the many wonderful entries we've received.
