Protect the public park in BSK 6th Stage, 2nd Block

A public park is meant to provide trees, soil, biodiversity, shade, play space and breathing room for the community. Yet the approximately 12,000 sq. ft. public park in BSK 6th Stage, 2nd Block has steadily lost a significant portion of its usable green space to concrete structures, tiles and other hard construction.

Available photographic documentation indicates that nearly 50% of the park's developed green cover and open ground has been replaced or occupied by hard surfaces and permanent construction.

This is deeply concerning at a time when Bengaluru is already facing increasing loss of urban green cover, rising temperatures, flooding risks and declining biodiversity.

What is happening to our park?
The park serves an estimated 2,500 residents and is one of the few publicly accessible green spaces available to the surrounding community.

Over time, substantial areas that could support trees, vegetation, children's play and biodiversity have been converted into built structures and paved surfaces.

Residents have also previously opposed attempts to introduce further non-park construction, including a proposed temple structure, within the park. Public parks must remain inclusive, accessible and dedicated to their primary purpose: green open space for everyone.

We are not against appropriate amenities that genuinely support the functioning of a public park. However, permanent construction and excessive paving should not progressively replace the very green space the park was created to provide.

Our demands
We respectfully request the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the concerned civic authorities to:

Preserve the park as an inclusive public green space and prevent its gradual conversion into infrastructure unrelated to the primary ecological and recreational purpose of a public park.
Immediately prevent any further permanent construction or excessive paving within the park.
Conduct and publicly disclose an assessment of the park's total area, green cover, paved area and built-up footprint.
Restore areas occupied by unnecessary hard surfaces wherever technically and legally feasible, replacing them with soil, native vegetation and permeable landscapes.
Develop a biodiversity-focused landscape plan that increases tree cover, native planting, habitat value and usable green space.
Ensure that any future intervention in the park is subject to transparency and meaningful consultation with local residents.
Why this matters
Bengaluru cannot afford to lose its neighbourhood green spaces one concrete slab at a time.

Every square foot of soil, vegetation and tree canopy contributes to a healthier and more liveable city. Neighbourhood parks are essential urban infrastructure for children, senior citizens, families, biodiversity and the mental and physical wellbeing of residents.

This campaign is not simply about one park.

It is about the principle that public green spaces should remain green.

We call upon the concerned authorities to protect, restore and improve this park for the thousands of residents who depend on it today—and for future generations who will inherit Bengaluru.
