SAVE OUR HOME: KEEP SOCIAL TANGO ALIVE AT EDAM STUDIO, VANCOUVER
- Protecting over two decades of community, connection, and culture at EDAM Studio -

INTRODUCTION

I am writing this from Buenos Aires, but my heart is thousands of miles away in Vancouver. Ever since hearing the heartbreaking news that we might lose EDAM Studio (*1), I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. We have tried searching for alternative spaces, but in vain—Vancouver’s market simply leaves no room for us.

So after failing to find a new home, I kept asking myself: Should we really give up on a space that our community has loved for over 20 years?

EDAM has been the historical home of Vancouver Tango for over two decades. We all know its flaws—we’ve laughed about the tilted floors and complained about the summer heat. Yet, it is the one place we always return to. It is where we see our tango family, practice, socialize, and grow together.

To see this sanctuary stripped away fills me with a quiet, heavy frustration. It reflects the larger struggles we face every day in Vancouver—skyrocketing rents, displacement, and community eviction.

A single voice may not sway a large organization's decision. But I wanted to know: Am I alone in feeling this loss? Or can we raise our voices together to show just how much this home means to us?

This is our last-minute effort to gather our community. Maybe—just maybe—if we stand together, we will be heard.

EDAM Studio and the Vancouver Tango Community
Here is how our beautiful community sanctuary blossomed over the last 20+ years:

Currently, two official Prácticas —El Centro Práctica by Francis (Wednesdays) and the Charity Práctica by Cathy & Elly (occasional Sundays)—are active at EDAM Studio.

**Disclaimer: While some events or contributors may not be fully captured here, the intention of this timeline is to highlight the long-standing, meaningful relationship between our tango community and EDAM Studio.**

What is Happening?
Recently, our current Práctica organizers (Cathy and Francis) received heartbreaking news: Western Front(*2) has instituted a new policy banning EDAM Studio from subletting the studio space starting in 2027. Without an exception or a new arrangement, our 20+ year history in this space will come to an abrupt end.

As you know, finding an alternative venue is incredibly challenging due to skyrocketing rents in Vancouver, and EDAM’s beautiful wooden floor and location are irreplaceable. Expecting these community-driven Prácticas—run purely as a labor of love—to compete with commercial market rates is equivalent to a community eviction. Losing this space would be a devastating blow to our culture and connection.

Why Social Tango Matters
Social Argentine Tango is not about flashy stage shows or commercial entertainment. It is an art form rooted in the simple, profound human act of holding each other in a warm embrace, walking together, and sharing music.

At EDAM Studio, this spirit is kept alive through two distinct, community-focused Prácticas:

El Centro Práctica (Wednesdays by Francis): A long-standing, welcoming, and non-judgmental space built for continuous learning, focused practice, and deepening technical and musical connections—featuring music carefully curated specifically for practice.

Charity Práctica  (Occasional Sundays by Cathy & Elly): Carrying on the tradition of Nadia’s Charity Práctica, this warm gathering is driven entirely by grassroots generosity—where dancing directly supports charitable causes and connects tango with the broader social good. It is also the only tango event in Vancouver operated on a donation basis.

Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage(*3), social tango offers benefits for mental health, cognitive well-being, and combating loneliness that are scientifically documented.

A study published by McGill University in 2015(*4) states that tango is an effective approach for treating Parkinson's disease, dementia, and depression. Furthermore, family therapist Virginia Satir(*5) famously said, "We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth."(*6)

In a city often dubbed "NoFunCouver"—where spaces for genuine human connection are rapidly disappearing—this community is a vital lifeline. For many of us, tango is not just a hobby; it is a way of life and so much more. We cannot let the light of Social Argentine Tango fade out at its historical home.

Even here in Buenos Aires—the birthplace of tango—keeping this culture alive is not that easy. Local artists are working tirelessly through grass-roots movements like "Agitando Tango"(*7), pasting "Bailemos Tango" posters on city walls to keep people dancing—an initiative officially recognized for its cultural merit by the City of Buenos Aires (Declaración de Interés Cultural)(*8).

If preserving tango culture requires such passionate, officially recognized effort even in its motherland, imagine how fragile and irreplaceable it is in a city like Vancouver. Once a sanctuary like EDAM is gone, rebuilding that community spirit becomes immensely challenging.

Our Goal
We want to open an honest, constructive conversation with the Board of Directors at Western Front. If subletting through EDAM is no longer an option under the new policy, we kindly ask them to consider a direct rental agreement or a special exception that honors the 20-year legacy of this cultural space.

We do not seek conflict or confrontation. Instead, we want to express our deepest gratitude to Western Front for providing EDAM Studio as our tango home for over two decades.

Just as an individual cannot thrive without a stable home, a community cannot grow without a place to gather. EDAM Studio has been that foundation for us. We simply hope to find a peaceful way to keep calling this sanctuary our home, so our community can continue to flourish alongside Western Front for years to come.

How You Can Help
If you have ever danced on the floor of EDAM Studio, felt the warmth of our community, or believe in preserving grassroots cultural spaces in Vancouver, please sign and share this petition!
Let’s continue to hug, dance, and connect at our Home of Tango.
Home is where the heart is.

EDAM Studio is not just a dance studio.

It's a HOME.

It's a HOME for the Vancouver Tango Community.

Thank you,
