A big thank you to all supporters and activists who've worked so hard to save our Delano greenspace and shade trees. The Wichita City Council voted unanimously this morning to reject the recommendation of planners and deny the rezoning application. Moreover, the Council motion stated that PUDs (Proposed Unit Development zoning) or "custom" zoning is not appropriate for spaces that are governed by pre-existing zoning. This is a tremendous victory for the neighborhood and other core neighborhoods striving to protect what makes their neighborhoods unique. It is also a small victory for neighborhood environmentalists who hope to protect low-income neighborhoods from the worst ravages of climate change by preserving and enlarging our urban tree canopy. Again, it would not have been possible without the hard work--that spanned the entire summer--of neighborhood activists to defeat the planned development. This included circulating and signing official protest petitions, putting more than 1500 flyers in doors, attending planning meetings, speaking to the media, and speaking at hearings before the Planning Commission and the 6th District Advisory Board, and individual meetings with members of the City Council. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition and everyone who shared it on social media, thanks to supporters and community members who attended and spoke out about this at community meetings.
