Save Our Civic Hall - Hold a Public Meeting, Listen to Residents & Stop Closure/Demolition
The Issue
Petition:
We the undersigned petition Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council, Nuneaton and Bedworth Councillors and the local MP (Craig Tracey) to work to save the Civic Hall and to:
- Scrap plans to Close or Demolish the Civic Hall.
- Hold a Public meeting at the Civic Hall to hear residents' views (Chaired by the MP with Councillors in attendance to listen and answer questions).
- For NBBC (possibly with a Citizens panel) to undertake a full consultation, and work, to set out a package to rescue the existing Civic Hall, to reduce costs, and to bring the venue back into use.
- Ensure WCC and NBBC work together with the community to develop plans for wider regeneration of Bedworth Town Centre to bring more into the town and invest to make Bedworth and our Borough Better with a bold vision for the future, to level up, not level down our Towns without losing all the current venue provides.
- Call on Civic Leaders to commit to make Bedworth the home for the Boroughs primary and premier conference and theatre activities in any future development.
Background:
While Nuneaton is set to get a new larger theatre (in a £20m project) which according to Councillors will take on the Belgrade - bulldozers are being sent into Bedworth to knock down the current Civic Hall which is now permanently closed despite recent election promises this would NOT happen.
The Council recently borrowed millions to build a hotel in Nuneaton. But wont fund improvements to the Civic Hall or put in place new management and reopen.
Despite no funding or concrete plans - there is a proposal for a new venue on the Civic Hall site, but that will have more than half the seats than now, and be even smaller than Nuneaton's new larger theatre, meaning big acts are unlikely to come back to Bedworth again and the same financial problems will exist. As well as meaning a big loss to the future of the local economy and potential for the Town.
Residents are angry that they have not been properly consulted and local people voices are not being listened too. It also feels like regeneration for Nuneaton but relegation for Bedworth. The Council should be investing in both towns for the whole of our Borough.
