The Issue
On August 18, 2025, Corus Entertainment announced that YTV and Treehouse TV would be replacing Nickelodeon/Nick Jr. programming with Cartoon Network/Cartoonito content this fall. This change follows the shutdown of YTV and Treehouse's dedicated channel, Nickelodeon, which will occurred on September 1, 2025. This marks the first time since the 2000s that YTV will air Cartoon Network programming, leaving no space for beloved Nickelodeon shows. Current Nickelodeon original programming is also available on Paramount+, but for many Canadians, this means no more Nickelodeon shows on cable TV!
For decades, Nickelodeon shows have been a staple of children's programming, bringing joy, laughter, and valuable lessons to countless families across Canada through YTV. Shows like "SpongeBob SquarePants," "The Fairly OddParents," "Dora the Explorer", "PAW Patrol" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" have not only entertained children but also helped shape the childhood of many, past and present.
The decision to replace these iconic shows affects both nostalgia-driven adults and children who continue to enjoy the great content Nickelodeon creates. Transitional decisions like these could hinder YTV’s viewership, as many might turn away when their favorite shows are no longer available on the platform.
It's important to keep diverse programming options available on cable TV so families have affordable access to a wide range of entertainment options. Nickelodeon has been part of our heritage, and keeping it on YTV continues a tradition of quality children's programming.
We urge Corus Entertainment to reconsider their decision and returning Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. programming on YTV and Treehouse alongside any new content from Cartoon Network and Cartoonito. By doing so, they would acknowledge the loyal fanbase Nickelodeon has in Canada and provide an inclusive platform for diverse children's entertainment.
