The Issue
Newport News Park & Trail757 will expand into the historic corridors of Endview & Lee Hall following Housing & Industrial Developments. What will be left for the public to engage with? That is up to us. It is Our Duty as informed citizens to request transparency from our Civic Leadership to ensure high-standard Archaeological & Environmental Stewardship prior to the commencement of any land-uses. Black & Indigenous historic sites are projected to be impacted by development with incomplete archaeological evaluations without intervention. With your support, we can ensure City Management enforces Public Archaeology programs be directly involved with proactively investigating these sites and deciding how these places are investigated, interpreted, and managed. This area is associated with significant Battlefields, including the Surrender of Yorktown that ended the American Revolution. Furthermore, Endview withholds the freshwater source of the Warwick River, the largest tributary of the City of Newport News, and the largest source of our drinking water via Lee Hall Reservoir. We must have transparency for how these developments will impact our limited historical, cultural, and environmental resources.
The City of Newport News identified this area as a food desert. The two proposed housing developments and industrial complex do not supply food to these communities. This risks further development encroachment into sensitive areas and community health. Given how the threatened landscapes of Endview / Lee Hall supports festivals, preserves our drinking water, protects ecosystems, and is historically significant, these places must be managed to a greater extent through public engagement initiatives to benefit our communities.
The management for Endview & Lee Hall corridors sets the precedent for the future of the Commonwealth. Trail757 is our opportunity to promote & protect our landmarks through increased public engagement. By requesting high-standard archaeological & environmental assessment partnerships with non-profits and the public, we can proactively safeguard important places for our future. How one place is managed affects the sustainability of all surrounding regions. By enhancing environmental buffers, we can ensure our Parks preserve our crucial water quality alongside complementary cultural & ecological resources. Parks are also just a place to unwind and enjoy what makes a place unique!

Our Initiative has its first major success! In July, the City Manager's Office requested a review of the historic resource management at Endview by the Council of Virginia Archaeologists (COVA). With your continued support, we can ensure that the public is involved in every step of the planning process, as active participants of discovery and landscape management.
The Endview & Lee Hall corridor is among the last preserved archaeological sites of Newport News. This has enormous potential for a future where Newport News Park has extensive ecotourism alongside cultural tourism. The Endview & Lee Hall Corridor of Newport News Park will serve as the "Gateway" to visitors entering Northern Newport News via the Colonial Parkway & Trail757.
Why This Matters to Our Communities:
Protecting Unique Landmarks: Trail757 is set to pass through the picturesque spots of Endview & Lee Hall in Newport News, and Fort Monroe in Hampton, among others. By engaging with how these places are managed, we can advocate for enhanced protections. Landmarks are community centers that bring people together for gatherings, festivals, events, and general sight seeing!
Ensuring Sustainability: Trail757 will increase public engagement with our landmarks, giving us the opportunity to protect culturally & environmentally significant places. Public Engagement revenues can be used to protect our waterways, environments, and historic sites.
Promoting Transparency: Engaging with our regional leadership can support public transparency with landscape management, unifying the people of Hampton Roads and beyond as stewards of our communities. Further community input is crucial. There must be transparency for how these developments will affect our drinking water, coastal/inland ecosystems, and our cultural resources. Many local residents have little to no information about the adverse impacts of these proposed developments.
