SAVE MOORLANDS ELEMENTARY — Keep Our School Open!
Our School. Our Students. Our Community.
To the Northshore School District Board of Directors:
Moorlands Elementary in Kenmore, Washington, is more than a school. It is a thriving community where dedicated teachers, involved families, and generations of students have built lasting relationships, traditions, and a strong sense of belonging.
Today, that community is at risk.
The Northshore School District's Enrollment and Demographics Advisory Committee (EDAC) has presented three school consolidation proposals. Every single proposal includes closing Moorlands Elementary in 2028.
District leadership says no final decision has been made. But when all three options lead to the same outcome for Moorlands, families are left asking:
Where is the option that keeps our school open?
A successful school deserves a fair evaluation
Moorlands is not a failing school.
In 2025, Moorlands ranked 74th out of approximately 1,160 Washington public elementary schools, placing it among the top 6% statewide, according to SchoolDigger.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, leadership transitions, and years of uncertainty, Moorlands teachers and staff have continued to provide an exceptional learning environment.
Our community has demonstrated resilience, academic achievement, and unwavering support for our children.
Why would we dismantle a successful school without first demonstrating that closure is necessary and that better alternatives do not exist?
We deserve answers before irreversible decisions are made
Northshore families recognize that declining enrollment and budget pressures present real challenges. We understand that difficult decisions may be necessary.
But closing a neighborhood elementary school should be a last resort, supported by transparent financial analysis, comprehensive facilities planning, and a meaningful evaluation of alternatives.
There are important questions that remain unanswered:
Financial justification: What are the actual net savings from closing Moorlands after accounting for additional transportation, student transitions, facility expenses, and future capital needs?
School capacity: How will receiving schools accommodate additional students while maintaining appropriate classroom space, specialist services, and learning environments?
Long-term facilities planning: Why close Moorlands before there is a clear, funded long-term plan for the facilities receiving its students?
Student stability: What are the academic, social, and emotional consequences of moving hundreds of children away from their existing school community?
District property investments: Why has the district invested in neighboring properties around Moorlands, and how were those investments considered in evaluating the school's future?
Alternatives: What would it cost to keep Moorlands open, and why hasn't that option been presented alongside the three closure proposals?
These questions matter not just to Moorlands families, but to every Northshore resident who expects responsible stewardship of public resources and thoughtful decisions about our children's education.
What we are asking the School Board to do
We, the undersigned parents, students, educators, alumni, neighbors, and community supporters, urge the Northshore School District Board of Directors to:
KEEP MOORLANDS OPEN. Include and meaningfully evaluate an alternative that preserves Moorlands Elementary rather than presenting only closure scenarios.
PROVIDE FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY. Publish a comprehensive comparison of the costs and savings associated with closure versus keeping Moorlands open.
PUT STUDENTS FIRST. Evaluate the effects of school transitions, increased transportation, classroom capacity, and the loss of established relationships and support systems.
PLAN FOR THE LONG TERM. Demonstrate how proposed changes align with future enrollment, capital investments, school rebuilding needs, and the district's long-term facilities strategy.
GIVE OUR COMMUNITY A REAL VOICE. Ensure that family and community feedback can meaningfully influence the decision before the School Board votes.
Once a neighborhood school closes, we cannot easily get it back.
This decision will affect far more than enrollment numbers on a spreadsheet.
It will affect where children learn, how families connect, where teachers build relationships, and what kind of community we leave for future generations.
Moorlands has served generations of families. Its educators and students have persevered through extraordinary challenges, and its community continues to thrive.
We are not asking the district to ignore its challenges. We are asking it to prove that closing Moorlands is the right solution before taking an irreversible step.
