Save Millport Pier
May 4, 2018
UPDATE! NAC have listened to representations of retaining a pier in Millport and suggestions of how the work can be carried out (via Millport Pier and Harbour Users’ Group consultant engineer at IKM) at considerable less cost than was originally estimated by NAC. The importance of a pier in Millport is beginning to be recognised as are the economic benefits that would result from the retention of the pier and the development of a marina within off-shore breakwaters. NAC have agreed to continued discussions with IKM regarding ways in which pier repairs could be carried out cost effectively. There were reminders that NAC currently have no available money but they are meeting with Scottish Govt. to discuss the Flood Protection Scheme, marina and pier on 23 May prior to a Cabinet meeting on 19 June after which there will be further consultations with the community. It looks like there will be three possible options all with similar costings. 1. 135m breakwater instead of the pier 2. Offshore breakwaters and demolition of the pier 3. Offshore breakwaters plus old pier / new pier. Cabinet papers, which will be published prior to the meeting on 19 June, will be posted here as will any further updates. I think it may be useful if all those who support the Save Millport Pier and marina within an off-shore breakwater campaign bombard elected members of Scottish Government with emails highlighting the fact that we certainly do not want our pier demolished and replaced with 135m breakwater and the benefits of a pier to an island community. I will post email addresses and suggestions for emails here tomorrow.
