Save Mexican American History and Culture in San Marcos!

Save Mexican American History and Culture in San Marcos!
The Issue
The Southside Mexican School, now home to Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos at 211 Lee Street, is a crucial part of San Marcos’ earliest known Mexican American neighborhood. It is one of only two Mexican American properties with Texas Historical Markers in town. However, SMCISD is currently in the process of selling the property adjoining Centro that once held classrooms, the Mexican Baptist Church, and historic homes. We need to let local government and historical organizations know that this parcel, one of the most historically significant properties in E. Guadalupe, must be bought and used to memorialize Mexican American history and culture. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated.
Since at least 1922, this historic parcel has stood as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the East Guadalupe Neighborhood. It is one of the few remaining undeveloped properties in the area. In addition to the aforementioned historic homes, Mexican Church, and earlier versions of the Mexican School, the surrounding blocks include three Mexican churches and the beloved Los Angeles Funeral Home, which was initially the site of a Mexican Lodge Hall.
This parcel is located in one of the three neighborhoods designated as a Mexican American and Indigenous Heritage and Culture District in 2021. It continues to house many Mexican American businesses and families.
It is up to YOU to make your voice heard! We must let local government and historical organizations know that a sale for other purposes will be a tragic loss to preserving the history and culture of our local Mexican American community. Our actions can make a difference.
Time is of the essence. We urge you to sign this petition immediately to show our local government and civic organizations that the community stands united in our support for preserving the rich cultural heritage of the E. Guadalupe Neighborhood. Gracias!
