The Issue

Save Mellands fields in Gorton Again (previous petition in 2010 and 2017)

We the undersigned petition the Council  leader  Bev Craig and Andy Burnham to Save Mellands Field Keep as intended for the people of Gorton as a much needed green space in this heavily polluted poor area of the city.

We need to Save Mellandsfield for children to play and breathe. This area is on the 98th percentile according to @addresspollution.org

In recent years all the green area surrounding us is  being built on.

Again we discovered information that Gillespie and Kellen homes have made a master plan and intend to build on this piece of greenery - 282 houses with parking for 2 cars will not help the biodiversity as is trying to be claimed by Gillespies is the masterplanner and landscape architect in close collaboration with Kellen Homes. "The scheme includes landscape enhancements to support wildlife and increase biodiversity, and establishes a clear street hierarchy to improve walking and cycling routes and encourage sustainable travel."

Mount road is already heavily congested as it is a route used to access the motorway. There is a lack of any infrastructure for cycling and sustainable travel.

The sight has a covenant on it, left to the people of Gorton and surrounding areas for our leisure. We are classed as a poorer area, "this piece of land was the only area for children to play on safely until it got fensed off"

I hope our local MP Afzal Khan will support this petition as I know he  supports #Ellaslaw and the fight for clean air for all.

I know the people of Gorton will support, but I hope that everyone who cares about all children and our planet's future will agree we need to save as many green spaces as possible we are at a tipping point in terms of Climate Emergency and need to stop building on all green areas and the distruction of mature trees and Manchester labour party need to start supporting nature, this land was ment to be left as a green space donated by a physician who cared about the health of children in Manchester.

If Bev Craig and Andy Burnham want a fairer society and really care for all children in GM I hope they support this petition as Bev Craig says "nothing better than getting outdoors for a bit of thinking time. Just one of over 140 parks and green spaces in Manchester. Green spaces in the heart of our cities are so important. That’s why we want to invest and improve them, and create more where we can." I'm sure if you lived opposite this green space you would also be doing all you could to preserve it for our future.
