Save Mel Davis as our Principal of Byron Bay Public School (Primary)
The issue
For anyone who missed the discreet message in this week’s Byron Bay Public School newsletter (published 21 Oct 2026) there was a very important announcement that affects all of us here in the Byron Bay community. The NSW Department of Education has made the decision to replace Byron Bay Public School’s beloved acting Principal, Mel Davis, with a permanent external appointment starting Term 1, 2027.
This unexpected change came as a sad shock to all of us, including Mel herself and her teaching staff. We have all witnessed firsthand the positive impact she has had on our children’s educational experience. The children of Byron Bay are thriving under her leadership; she has cultivated a nurturing and supportive environment that encourages learning and growth. Mel has not only provided stability but has actively engaged with students, parents, and staff alike, fostering a sense of community and belonging that is essential in a primary school environment.
Mel’s dedication and care can be witnessed daily, as she stands at the school gate each morning welcoming each one of her students by name. She is truly unique and an asset to the Byron Bay community.
Prior to Mel stepping in and taking on her acting Principal role, the students of Byron Bay Public School faced challenges with instability from changing leadership. They do not need this again.
It seems baffling and unfair to replace such a dedicated acting Principal without just cause. Despite Mel’s outstanding leadership, and the stability and positive impact she’s brought to our school community in her role as acting Principal the past 18 months, she was not considered for the permanent position.
Our community should have a say in the decisions that directly affect us and our children’s futures. We ask the NSW Department of Education to reconsider this decision and allow Mel Davis to continue in her role.
Please join us in this effort to support Mel Davis as our Principal by signing this petition.
