Save McCann Campground: Preserve Our Greenport Community Treasure
The Issue
Preserve Our Greenport Community Treasure
As a proud resident of Greenport, I am deeply troubled by the recent article in Suffolk Times regarding Mayor Kevin Stuessi's proposal to develop our beloved McCann Campground into affordable housing. This cherished space is a cornerstone of our community, and we cannot fathom a future without it.
Today, this historic and popular campground is under threat. This area, bordering Moore's Drain, is not only home to diverse wildlife but also offers open space for Greenport residents, local business owners, workers, and tourists from all over the world, all of whom contribute significantly to our local economy.
The proposed development will have a detrimental impact on our community, despite the Mayor's claims of its benefits. The property has existing land restrictions that are now at risk. If we oppose this development, we must act now before it's too late.
Nearly a century ago, Herbert J. McCann generously gifted this land to the Village of Greenport to serve as a campground for all generations. This gift was intended to provide a space for everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of our seaport town (source: *Postcard History Series, Greenport*, Page 50).
Losing this vital piece of Greenport's heritage would be a devastating blow to our community’s character and natural beauty. We must come together to preserve this space.
By signing this petition, you join a community dedicated to preserving the natural and historical beauty of Greenport for future generations
**We, the undersigned, urge the Village of Greenport to protect McCann Campground from development and ensure that future generations can enjoy this irreplaceable treasure.**
