The Issue

Did you know Maryland is losing land every year to erosion and rising sea levels? If we don't act now, we'll lose our shoreline, homes, wildlife, and safety.

Coastal erosion is affecting beaches, communities, and ecosystems across our state. While places like Ocean City receive regular beach nourishment (the process of adding sand to eroded shorelines), many other vulnerable areas like Assateague Island and parts of the Chesapeake Bay are left unprotected and growing increasingly vulnerable.

Rising sea levels and stronger storms caused by climate change are making the problem worse. Each year, Maryland loses land, wildlife habitats, and valuable public space. Maryland has lost over 260 acres of shoreline since 1970. Without more widespread and consistent nourishment efforts, roads, homes, and local economies will continue to be at risk.

I'm a high school student working on a civic action project to raise awareness and promote solutions. I believe every Maryland shoreline deserves protection.

We're asking Maryland leaders, including the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of the Environment, to expand support and funding for beach nourishment in more areas of the state.

Please sign this petition to show that protecting Maryland's beaches matters.
