What are dangerous drugs and why are they banned and placed upon such harsh sentences such as hang to death? As stated in the Laws of Malaysia, Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, anyone found guilty of trafficking or in possession of 50 grams or more in weight of Cannabis is sentenced to death. It is placed alongside heroin, morphine and cocaine that are said to be equivalently injurious to health. After 1937 during the times of great depression in history, Cannabis was slowly banned worldwide following the decision made by the United States who portrayed it to cause severe mental illnesses and even death! This may be why it is seemed reasonable to instate such laws over the plant. However, scientifically sound and legitimate studies proving its dangers were scarce. Advertising and cinematography were responsible on the outburst of misconception and fear over Cannabis all over the world. It was not until 1988 when scientists from Johns Hopkins University found receptors in the brain of lab rats that were activated with the use of Cannabis. This discovery sparked researches nationwide in the United States which eventually led to the legalization of Cannabis in a few states including Washington, D.C.
In Malaysia today, the study titled “Human Evolution and Cannabis” by Harish Kumar contains data from 961 respondent s who participated in the online survey on Cannabis use by humans. Harish was supported by local NGO, MCare Society, whom also funded the publication of the study at the IABS 2015 conference. They chose to place the study online as “Open Source” for free review and reference by everyone. By referring to the results of the study, over 95% of all respondents including those who did not consume Cannabis rated it to be very safe and medically useful. Together with the numerous studies conducted globally in recent years, Cannabis has continuously been reviewed to be safer than caffeine and even water in some cases! This global fact in addition to the ability for Cannabis to effectively treat numerous chronic diseases such as epileptic seizures should be the major key points that the ministers and government should evaluate. Knowledge and information spreads far and fast in the current era that everything is no longer discrete, which undoubtedly applies for even the people in power such as our current Prime Minister. People will quickly be aware of the speculations surrounding Cannabis and question the credibility and acclaimed medical potentials behind it. It is now high time that a local governed researched study be started to prepare us for the future.
According to the Laws of Malaysia, Act 234, 45A, if it appears to the Minister that a decision of the Commission or of the United Nations Organization to alter any of the Schedules to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961. The international treaty was to prohibit production and supply of specific (nominally narcotic) drugs and of drugs with similar effects except under license for specific purposes, such as medical treatment and research. This petition has addressed all the respected parties capable and responsible to allow and start the controlled clinical research study on humans to gather vital biological and psychological data that will provide a strong and certain stance on the true effect of the plant. We have placed the “Human Evolution and Cannabis” study as the forefront clinical research that should be started by the United Nations because the suggested methods for the study can provide the data required as well as answer and possibly resolve the growing concern in the rise of neuropsychiatric disorders around the world today. We are certain that this study will provide the United Nations and the world with remarkable insights on the human evolution based on the theories which have been published and peer-reviewed by scholars with accurate and precise references.
With your support from Malaysia and all over the world, we could bring together our voice as a human race to demand that we gain accurate facts and data before having to sentence more people to death in the future! Only when we are together can we make a difference and save the lives of these people. Please share this petition on your social sites like Whatsapp, Facebook and many more so that we could reach more people. We highly appreciate you time and support. Thank you!
