Thank you to everyone who signed my petition to show your support for fabric. Although we reached almost 160,000 signatures, this wasn’t enough – on 6th September Islington Council made the disappointing decision to revoke the club’s licence, but this is not the end! The decision and trial was not fair – no regard was paid to anyone who signed up, nor the letters written to council, or the strong case presented by fabric. Some of the suggestions put forward were outright laughable, such as “lowering the BPM” as a safety measure. The feeling after the hearing was one of disbelief, sadness and anger, not least for the 250 staff who lost their jobs. We just can’t accept that fabric’s legacy of 17 years ends like this. The club will appeal the decision, but the cost of keeping a small team and preparing a legal battle with the venue still in hibernation mean it will be a very expensive process. Their appeal will simply not be possible without our collective financial support. Over the last few weeks we’ve seen how much we’ve cherished coming to one of the world’s most important clubs – just think of all of our own stories, memories and experiences that have defined what fabric means to us over the years. In the same week we’ve read about clubs in other European cities like Berlin and Vienna being celebrated as cultural spaces, it’s time that we stand up to save fabric and protect London’s nightlife too. So let’s all do what we can to contribute to the save fabric fund and share the message – it’s time for us to come together as a community to stand up for what’s right, to keep London’s nightlife alive, and to protect our right to enjoy art and culture.
