A public notice issued by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (Garden & Tree Authority Department) vide Advertisement No. 65 dated 22/04/2026 proposes the cutting of 138 trees, including 22 heritage trees, at Plot No. 3 under the Orange (London) City Street Project.
As per the notice, citizens were invited to submit objections within the stipulated time period regarding the proposed tree felling.
Given the current scenario of extreme heat waves and increasing evaporation, these trees are crucial for regulating temperature, retaining moisture, and sustaining the local microclimate.
They play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality, and reducing urban heat, thereby maintaining Nagpur’s ecological balance.
Losing them will worsen urban heat and harm our ecological balance. These trees are vital for Nagpur’s climate and air quality, and their loss will have long-term consequences that cannot be reversed quickly.
In response, objections have been raised highlighting serious environmental concerns, including:
Loss of mature and decades-old trees, including heritage trees
Adverse impact on local biodiversity and microclimate
Concerns regarding necessity, alternative planning, and transparency in compensatory plantation
This objection forms a crucial part of ongoing efforts to ensure that due process, environmental safeguards, and public participation are upheld in the execution of the project.
