Speeding Campaign – Positive Response from Lancashire Police Chief

On Monday we presented our petitions (online and paper) – then totalling 415 signatures to the Lancashire Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner. Over 20 letters from the children at Water School were also handed to him. There were many local residents in attendance who made their strength of feeling very clear to the Deputy Commissioner.

There were some very positive outcomes from the meeting and the Deputy Commissioner promised several concrete actions to address our concerns.

Most significantly, the police will now be installing fixed radar cameras in several locations along Burnley Road East to monitor speeding and collect vehicle registrations of those who exceed the speed limit. Speeding drivers will then receive a personal visit from a police officer.

Whilst data are being collected and warnings issued during this monitoring period we will be continuing our speed awareness campaign with the Deputy Commissioner’s active financial and logistical support. As part of this, banners will be erected in speeding hotspots along the road and every resident on Burnley Road East will be invited to display an eye-catching anti-speeding sticker in a prominent location at their property.

This is very much the start of an ongoing process. The Deputy Commissioner will be visiting us again in a few months to review progress based on the collected data and we will be pressing hard for further measures should these still prove necessary.
